Independent media. Since its inception, KBDI has taken an independent approach to public broadcasting. KBDI’s fusion of superior PBS programs, select shows from independent sources, and a wealth of local productions is the hallmark of the station’s broadcasting style. Now, KBDI is proud to add DEMOCRACY NOW! – a national, independent, award-winning news program – to its late-night news line up.
Beginning April 3, DEMOCRACY NOW will air each weeknight at 11pm. This one-hour program will round out two hours of international news and independent viewpoints as it follows BBC WORLD NEWS at 10pm and THE JOURNAL at 10:30pm.
“We are delighted to be airing DEMOCRACY NOW!, said Wick Rowland, KBDI president. “It is a logical extension of the wide-ranging array of hard-hitting, insightful public affairs programming that is the KBDI trademark. The series harkens back to KBDI’s founding tradition of critical, independent reporting and discussion, and we are pleased to be the program’s exclusive broadcast television venue in Colorado” he added.
Hosted by award-winning journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, DEMOCRACY NOW! provides access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S. corporate-sponsored media. Resources include independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts. Additionally, DEMOCRACY NOW! hosts real debates – debates between people who substantially disagree, such as between the White House or the Pentagon spokespeople on the one hand, and grassroots activists on the other.
For true democracy to work, people need easy access to independent, diverse sources of news and information. Primarily concerned with issues related to war, human rights and U.S. foreign and domestic policy, DEMOCRACY NOW! attempts to provide an alternative to mainstream news coverage.
In order to maintain their editorial independence, the program’s producers do not accept advertisers, donations from corporations, or donations from governments. DEMOCRACY NOW! is funded entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers, and foundations.
DEMOCRACY NOW! and its staff have received some of journalism’s most prestigious awards, including the George Polk Award, The Columbia-Dupont Award, and many Golden Reel Awards from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.
DEMOCRACY NOW! became an independent non-profit organization in June, 2002. The program is currently broadcast on over 300 radio and television stations and is growing. The show is produced in New York City’s Chinatown, just blocks from where the towers of the World Trade Center once stood.
