Mark Friday is a Denver gem who has been highly visible in the local arts community for decades. His combinations of disparate found and fabricated elements are creatively and cleverly combined into unexpected and chimerical sculptures. ArtHaus Gallery at 3343 Larimer Street is proud to present CONSTRUCT, a solo exhibition featuring Friday’s illuminated sculptures, November 1–December 27, 2013. The public is invited to an opening reception on First Friday, November 1 from 6 to 10 pm, and to view the exhibition during regular business hours, Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm and by appointment. ArtHaus is offering a Show & Tell artist series in conjunction with the exhibition. At Find Out Part I Mark Friday will discuss and demonstrate his illuminated works. Part I occurs on Thursday November 14, 7 to 8:30 pm. A $5 donation is suggested. Find Out Part II is a weekend workshop at which participants can create their own illuminated sculpture under the guidance of Mark Friday. This will take place November 23-24 from 9 am to 4 pm each day. The $150 fee includes 2 days of instruction & illumination supplies. To register for the workshop email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 303-292-1965. The words salvaged, reclaimed, and repurposed apply to Friday's work. Most artists start with new materials and fresh surfaces. Mark does the same thing with vintage croquet balls that he does with words: He gives them new meanings when he reinvents their context. Friday's sculptures have a way of jogging a memory, and at the same time forwarding the components (a washboard, clothes pins, or a mouse trap) into a new time frame. Friday's Slice & Dice sounds like a benevolent appliance, but it looks like it could shred a lawn chair. A benign old ladder, Formerly a Ladder, becomes a restraint apparatus. The ladder is there but it has disappeared into a formidable wall contraption. How did he do that? With an inventive mind that is constantly re-evaluating what is in front of him. ArtHaus is a modern flexible gallery space located in the RiNo district at 3343 Larimer Street. Visitors are welcome Monday through Friday 10:00 to 4:00 and by appointment.
