Original message: Local Elementary Students To Compete In 2013 International Robot Olympiad. HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado (November 21, 2013) - The SME Tech Cubs, a group of 3rd through 6th grade students who attend Stone Mountain Elementary in Douglas County, Colorado, will be competing in the International Robotics Olympiad which is being held, for the first time in the United States. The Tech Cubs team will compete in a series of events against approximately 1,500 students from around the world. Currently, the SME Tech Cubs is the largest U.S. team attending. This will be their first time competing in the 15-year-old Robotic Olympiad. Students, with the help of their parents, have acquired the necessary components to compete. Depending on the event, the equipment ranges from basic electrical components to kits that included multiple motors, to 12” tall ‘humanoid’ robots. Students will compete in multiple events over the 4-day Olympiad. The students will be required to build and program new robotic solutions between events. The Tech Cubs are expecting to compete in programs ranging from the Robot Push Out, Mission Challenge, Robot Movie, Energy Saving Robot, Robot Dance, to the Robot Survival throughout the event. The event, hosted by Douglas County’s Ameribotics, will be held at the Denver Convention Center December 16-19, 2013. The SME Technology and Robotics club is an after school club that is led by parent volunteers. The club, formed in 2012, has approximately 40 students. November 23 and December 7 are pre-qualifying competitions for the U.S. teams. These will be held at Westridge Recreation Center in Highlands Ranch.
