Thank you so much for being on the leading edge of information sharing. For not leading the party line. For sharing ALL the information, no matter how "out there" it seems. I'm so grateful that I can tune into my own TV in my home and get educated to this level. Please keep it up! Anna

Garbage science in Seeds of Death

Program: Seeds of Death: Unveiling the Lies of GMOs (12 comments)
I am so disappointed in the programming you are showing tonight and your labeling it as a serious, scientific "documentary". Seeds of Death is total junk science. This is not a service to the public, it is garbage. The "science" in the documentary is not peer-reviewed, factual, or acknowledged by the scientific community. Contrary to the documentary's claim, working scientists at universities and industry are not part of a vast conspiracy to foist GMOs on the public. They are bright caring folks who have dedicated lives to improving the food supply, environment, and human health. As a PhD scientist in molecular biology and educator, I am appalled that the Seeds of Death program and the guests speaking during the pledge break sound more like conspiracy theorists than scientists. The guest on currently is just ranting, sounds like a right-wing survivalist. So disappointed...
Really disappointed in the so-called documentary

Continued failure of healthy skepticism

Program: Seeds of Death: Unveiling the Lies of GMOs (12 comments)
I'm grateful that CPTV has made clear in their response to my concerns just how willing they are to suspend healthy skepticism of implausible (and debunked claims)when presented as the political opinions their executives support. An individual who profits from fear and ignorance, and denies the existence of AIDS is not to be trusted on matters scientific, medical, or otherwise. I'm disturbed that these same executives are unwilling to acknowledge the well-published criticisms (easily found) of this "documentary" and seem amenable to the idea that a single corporation has paid off and manipulated the majority of Colorado voters. This failure of responsible journalism is an insult to to viewers and their contributions through public funding or individual donations. I'll be ensuring that my friends and family know why CPTV does not merit the reputation of PBS as the "most trusted" source.
Uncritical airing of irresponsible pseudoscience

Program: Seeds of Death: Unveiling the Lies of GMOs (12 comments)
As a biologist, mother, and Colorado resident, I was deeply disappointed to see this program airing this morning. PBS is considered to have a unique level of credibility in science and journalistic programming, and it is an abuse of viewers' trust to air this pseudoscientific nonsense produced by an AIDS denialist with NO expertise in biotechnology or agriculture. This program presents falsified and retracted claims as fact, misrepresents the credentials of so-called experts, and profits from blatant fearmongering. It is no coincidence that "experts" such as Gary Null, Vandana Shiva, Joseph Mercola, etc. rile up unfounded fears and then profit exorbitantly from speakers fees and "natural cures" targeted at those same fears. It is true that the understanding the methods, challenges, and goals of biotechnology and agriculture are critically important to making decisions that will effect the future of our society. Any technology can be used responsibly or irresponsibly, and has the potential for unintended consequences. It would be far more valuable for PBS to air programs which present verifiable facts and offer rigorous analysis, so that viewers are equipped to evaluate claims of those who have financial interests in any side of these issues. Airing propaganda is abusive to viewers who seek information and education from a credible source. I urge executives at CPTV to take a long look at their own backgrounds and biases, and consult experts in relevant fields (whose contact information is readily available from state universities) before sponsoring inflammatory claims.
CPT12 Response:
Thank you so much for watching CPT12 and for writing in.
I let Gary know of your concerns and here is his reply:

From Gary Null, Ph.D. 2/17/15
“Let this viewer give the specific statements that they find objectionable. We have independent experts preview all of my documentaries . If she can show me a mistake I will correct it. I lose tens of thousands of dollars on every documentary/. I do not charge P.B.S. or any other venue. We put this film on the internet for free. I spent more than two thousand hours of research and read every article on the safety of gmo’s. The pro gmo advocates spent tens of millions of dollars to convince people that they are safe. I have spent nearly 50 years as a social activist…never was paid a penny to lecture or testify or broadcast on any of the documentaries. We have more independent science now than at the time the film was released and it shows that gmo’s are even worse that the film projects. Clarence Darrow said “I do not pretend to know what many ignorant men are sure of””.

I have also attached a copy of Gary’s CV updated in Dec 2013. Please excuse I need an update - he has written at least three new books on nutrition since then as well as produced two award-winning investigative documentaries.

Also please find attached, a 6 page excerpt of a list of my on-going research on the topic of GMO’s since 2007.And here is a link to the research presented by Right To Know Colorado who is behind Prop 105 and pushing for mandatory GMO labeling. http://www.righttoknowcolorado.org/resources

CPT12 presents information and content not widely seen in main steam media. Our research shows that close to 40% of Americans have questions about the safety of GMO’s. My research has not come up with any clinical trials based on human consumption. As an allergic kid myself, I began to pay attention to food labels and how preservatives were wrecking havoc with my immune system. I have also contacted Monsanto three different times inviting them to do an interview or come to the CPT12 studios. We have only received a reply – no conversation:

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MONSANTO TO CPT12

Monsanto is 100 percent focused on agriculture and our business succeeds when farmers find our products offer them value on their farms. Because Monsanto is a leader in biotechnology, our company and products are often the subject of activist campaigns which are not always balanced or accurate. We provide Monsanto’s position and perspective on a wide range of issues at www.monsanto.com.

Are you aware of how much money was spent in Colorado pushing back on GMO labeling? What is there to hide? https://www.google.com/search?q=money+spent+for+pro+gmo+lableing+in+colorado&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&gws_rd=ssl

With sky rocking levels of obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease in the US, I hope people will be empowered with access to information and will do their own research and support discussion, critic and transparency for information concerning the health and welfare of people.

Thank you for asking questions and taking the time to write in.

Sincerely,

SB

I just turned this program on and in the first minute the only true thing I heard was the fact that Monsanto will pursue its patents. I would never donate to a station that would present this fiction as truth. I just heard the person begging for $$ that it's "a little controversial" well no crap. When you try to pass of baloney science as science, it should be controversial. I have no connection with Monsanto or any seedstock company. What I have done is analyzed GMO grain to PPB levels and find NO DIFFERENCE chemically or nutritionally to legacy grains. I guess next it'll be HFCS you're lieing about. The guy talking right now (1.42 PM) sounds like some guy that would be selling magnets to purify your water. For a station connected with a premier science university, you should be ashamed for pandering to unscientific beliefs such as this.

Recount the GMO labeling vote!

I think we need an independent recount of our latest vote on this topic.
CPT12 Response:
Thank you for your email and suggestion.  Proposition 105 lost by a wide percentage, so I doubt if there will be a recall.
I got to admit I was surprised by the election outcome.
All the Best,

This program is a total misrepresentation of the scientific evidence and most the of science being cited in this program has been discounted by the scientific community. You do no service to the your viewers by promoting such biased programming and promoting a point of view not supported by any reputable science.
CPT12 Response:
I am assuming your email  refers to Gary Null’s Seeds of Death. You are not alone in your disapproval.
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. Colorado Public Television does  take our  viewers comments seriously when planning future programming.

Seeds of Death is complete BS

Program: Seeds of Death: Unveiling the Lies of GMOs (12 comments)
It should be criminal to air such shallow and non authoritative documentaries. This documentary is complete BS they cover no real facts and merely speculate of the possibility of GMO harm. They also leave out ALL of the benefits of GMO crops which far out way the negative aspects of GMO, which until proven otherwise remains at ZERO. Also fun food for thought; Most "real" farmers aren't authors on the side and the leading voice in this mess of non scientific rhetoric is the one and only Bruce Lipton the same guy that says he can control plants with his mind and the list of other guest speakers I wouldn't trust to walk my dog. As an adult you're free to believe what you want, but there are kids that watch these shows and don't have the tools that most adults have to verify fact from fiction, so please stop spreading this crap! Thanks :)

Where were you

Program: Seeds of Death: Unveiling the Lies of GMOs (12 comments)
Where were you when this was an election issue here in California and Colorado. I didn't know anything about this until my sister in CA called me and told be about it. It would have been helpful to have seen your video BEFORE the election. The people here in Colorado are oxygen deprived and drugged. I couldn't believe it that these oxymorons voted NOT to label GMOs. Where were YOU!!!!
CPT12 Response:
Thanks for writing.  It was aired just before the elections.  Probably not as many times as we usually do, but it was aired.

Thank you for watching and supporting Colorado Public Television.
