Best Mini-Documentary or Series (Public Television):
First Place winner:  “Sandzén:  Ecstasy of Color”
Produced by Joshua Hassel, Edited by Heather Dalton
Raised in Vastergotland Sweden, Birger Sandzén after studying art in Stockholm and Paris, moved to Lindsborg Kansas at the age of 23 in 1894. Influenced by post-impressionism and the Swedish National Movement, Sandzén found himself entranced by the wide opened spaces and the brilliant light of the American West. A landscape painter compelled by the colors of nature, Sandzén created energetic original mountain and prairie scapes that are truly modern, forging a link from impressionism to abstraction.  This documentary follows Sandzén from his Swedish roots to his new homeland in Kansas and on through his many summers spent painting in the Rocky Mountains.
Second Place winner:   “Rex Ray:  How to Make a Rex Ray”
Produced by Joshua Hassel
No other contemporary artist has mastered the handcrafted aesthetic of fine art while pushing the limits of graphic design as Rex Ray. This celebrated artist takes us on a tour, from his hometown in Colorado Springs to his glorious live/work studio space in San Francisco, showing us the magic of his artistic process and everyday practice.  Whether he’s creating a painting or donating a graphic design for a Smart Car, Rex Ray is continually reinventing a language that speaks in both worlds of art and computer graphics.
