FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Colorado Public Television to Host TEDxCrestmoorParkED: The Education Spark

October 24 Live Event Will Explore SPARK and the Importance of
Physical Activity in School for its Resulting Academic Boost.

September 3, 2013 (Denver, CO): Colorado Public Television (CPT12, PBS) in partnership with TEDxCrestmoorPark and Jefferson County Schools, is pleased to host TEDxCrestmoorParkED: The Education Spark, a TEDx conference event that will feature dynamic and enlightening speakers who can speak to SPARK, academics and physical fitness, dropout prevention strategies, and additional ideas related to education. The event is being held on October 24 from 2-5 p.m. at the Lakewood Cultural Center in Lakewood, Colorado in addition to being live streamed.

One of the key ideas that will be presented is SPARK. Designed to directly impact learning performance, SPARK is both a book and a philosophy on the science that shows the benefits of physical activity on brain performance and behavior. The initiative is based on the book SPARK, by Harvard MD, Dr. John Ratey, that argues the link between improved academic performance, better attendance and reduced behavioral issues with vigorous physical activity when included in every school day. By getting students physically moving during every school day resulting in the preparation the brain needs for learning, SPARK is showing incredible academic developments.

During the academic years 2012-2014 Jefferson County Schools (Jeffco) is implementing SPARK in five schools to test the revolutionary brain and fitness initiative. Using heart rate monitors to record physical activity data for each participating student, the participating schools are scheduling language arts or math classes immediately following the 25+ minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Their goal is to develop and implement a research-based program that will target academic outcomes via strategic exercise and academic scheduling for targeted students during the school day.

“We want to give every advantage to our children in terms of helping them learn,” said Dr. Heather Beck, Chief Academic Officer for Jeffco Public Schools. “Dr. Ratey clearly explains in his book SPARK that there is a physiological component to learning. As we continue exploring researched based avenues for increasing student achievement, Dr. Ratey’s work clearly and simplistically outlines the body-mind connection and how the brain learns. We are utilizing this research to accelerate learning for our students. Of course, we know physical exercise is critical for healthy bodies and now, we are learning it is also critical for learning.”
"CPT12 has been working with a variety of community partners on the dropout crisis in Colorado as part of our American Graduate initiative,” said Kim Johnson, Chief Operating Office and interim General Manager for CPT12. “When we learned about the impact that SPARK was having on Colorado students, we knew we had to create a larger forum for educators to convene and discuss the potential merits of SPARK in other counties as well. Combine CPT12’s legacy of presenting health care information with our passion for education and we couldn’t be more excited to present TEDxCrestmoorPark: The Education Spark both in person and for our online communities.”

This event is made possible by a grant received as part of a national outreach campaign launched by WNET New York Public Media and its affiliate THIRTEEN Productions LLC in order to extend public awareness, debate and community action around the important issues showcased in TED TALKS EDUCATION, the first-ever TED project specifically produced for television. The outreach initiative is part of American Graduate:  Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities across America address the dropout crisis.

Locally, the Colorado Health Foundation is the presenting sponsor with additional sponsorship support provided by Whole Foods, Eldorado Springs Water, Comcast, Sports Authority, Design Case, CSI A/V and Frame de Art.

TEDx licensee, TEDxCrestmoorPark is an instrumental partner in the planning and execution of TEDxCrestmoorParkED: The Education Spark, bringing TEDx conference experience to the partnership. Past events have included TEDxCrestmoorPark and TEDxCrestmoorParkWomen.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis (subject to certain rules and regulations.)Learn More.
